i will be moving for the second time since i lost my eye sight. the first time was not stressful since i moved in with family. this time i am moving to a new city and all by myself. so, i wanted to ask. what things should i keep at the forefront of my mind when relocating? example, public transportation, job market, ect. now, once i have found a place. what things should i include in a checklist? i have; bus routes, points of interest, contacting the local blind services, what other things should i include in a moving checklist?
thanks,gizzy
Well you want too include where your place is in relation to the nearest store, medical facility and other services you will probably need.
After you get there, order a pizza from a local place delivered, pay the guy a bit extra on the tip, and ask a few questions you have about the general layout of where you live. Drivers are the best for location info, and delivery drivers the best of the best, because they have to know a lot of detail about the immediate area. I know GPS has changed things a lot, but I tended to make that a regular practice when I moved.
Also there is a site online called City-data.com (speech users there is a dash between city and data), which has a lot of valuable info about your prospective new area.
Just keep all your new info in a place you can get to it, your phone or whatever. I used to just keep it on a couple sheets of Braille paper back in the day but now electronic devices you can take it with you.
If you have a hobby that gets you into the local community definitely hook up with local enthusiasts because whether you become actual friends or not, there is serious data-gathering there, since you have a common interest.
